The fire service responds to emergency calls for a particular area 365 days of the year. There are more 49 separate fire services across England and Wales, and more in Scotland and Ireland.

The fire and rescue service is required for all fire emergency calls, and is also required to offer assistance in car or rail crashes, collapsed building and other challenging situations.

Specialist training will ensure that every safety precaution is taken when attending emergency scenes. Over recent years a much stronger emphasis has emerged on fire prevention and community safety. Accidental fires in the home are the main cause of deaths, therefore the fire service will do everything they can to ensure people prevent these accidents. This is achieved through home fire safety visits, informing younger people of the dangers or fires, and carrying out inspections of buildings to improve the safety of the building.
