The police force is one of the biggest employers in the UK, with over 32,500 police officers in London alone. The police force employs people to work as police community support officers or as office support staff as well as police officers.

Police staff, traffic wardens, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and volunteer police officers all make up the police force and are relied upon by the general public to keep the peace among the public and offer support in dangerous situations. They must react quickly to 999 calls and similarly to an ambulance service, they rarely know the extent of the problem until they arrive at the scene. Not only do they answer 999 calls, but they must also patrol the streets so that their presence is felt so to deter crime.

As an employer, the police force offers a generous starting salary and holiday allowance, with paid overtime.
