One of the first professions we think of when we hear the word ‘fashion’ – notably high fashion – is modelling. In a nutshell, if somebody needs a model for a photo shoot, advert, article etc. then they will likely go through an agency to find one.

There are hundreds of modelling agencies in the UK, some very famous, but others quite small. The vast majority of working models will be represented by one or more of these agencies in the UK.

Modelling agencies will present models to designers and advertisers who will use them for campaigns or one-off adverts. Modelling can start at a young age, and there are many different types of modelling that can be done. Agencies will find work for models, taking a percentage of earnings for each contract.

Unfortunately, there are a number of "cowboy" agencies who will either scam a model by insisting on a one-off fee in promise of work, or lie about the type of modelling that they can offer. Luckily, there are a number of organisations that have been created to assist aspiring models in choosing the right modelling agency.
