Scientific research and development and medical science is hugely important for the evolution of human healthcare, understanding of our natural world, and the protection of our environment. Due to the importance of scientific research and development, there are many not-for-profit organisation and institutions that employ scientists in this area.

Not-for-profit organisations and institutions are usually independently run and funded by charities, trusts and company sponsorship. These organisations and institutions can specialise in any one of the following areas:

  • Medical and biological science
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Environmental sciences
  • Chemical science
  • Agriculture
  • Engineering
  • Food and drink

Some organisations gain sponsorship from the Research Councils UK, who invest around £3 billion in research each year, covering all scientific services and providing access to the best research facilities available in the UK and around the world.
