Animal care assistants work in animal care centres, rescue homes, catteries, kennels and other facilities where animals are looked after on either a temporary or permanent basis.

Their role is to ensure that the animals under their care or the care of the facility are receiving the best they can.

On a day to day basis, care assistants are responsible for:

  • Feeding
  • Cleaning
  • Excercise
  • Providing basic veterinary care

Many of the animals in centres will have been neglected or abused in some way. Care assistants must rehabilitate animals, both physically and psychologically, before they can be released, many for adoption and rehoming.

Care assistants have frequent and direct contact with animals, so a passion for animal welfare is extremely important.
