Often seen as one of the most glamorous careers, the modelling world is fraught with competition and models have to work extremely hard to make a successful living.

Fashion models are employed, usually through an agency, to model clothing, shoes and accessories for editorial – posing for photo shoots for magazines, advertising campaigns and catalogues – and walking on the catwalk.

Editorial fashion models follow the direction of a photographer or art director to create looks which will amplify the appeal of a certain product, whether an item of clothing, a pair of shoes, a piece of jewellery or makeup.

Catwalk or runway models walk in fashion shows to display designers’ newest collections.

Before being chosen for jobs, a model needs to be booked by an agency. Once they have been taken on, they will be sent to castings and go-sees. A go-see involves a model going to meet a prospective client with a view to being booked for imminent or future work.
