Barbering as a profession was the original name for hairdressing. However, despite its age, in recent years the number of barbers and associated salons has been in decline. Barbers are considered by the industry as providing more services opposed to styling.

Barbers maintain hair not only on the head but on the face, neck, nostrils and ears. As a result, most if not all clientele are male. They can work within beauty salons, which is rare, or in their own outlets signified by the traditional red and white striped pole.

A barber can cut hair, shave the customer with a ‘cut throat’ razor, massage the scalp and neck and sell appropriate products to compliment the client’s visit.
