Farm managers either run their own businesses or are employed to run a farm on behalf of the owner. Running a farm involves a variety of different tasks, from practical to administrative, all of which require strong organisational skills and business acumen.
Farm managers working on livestock farms must run a farm efficiently, safely and profitably. They supervise other farm workers and ensure that all tasks are completed on time and on budget. They plan how the farm is run on a daily basis, so that the animals are healthy and happy and the farm makes money.
Farm managers are employed on all types of farms: dairy, cattle, sheep, pig or poultry farms. Certain daily tasks may depend on the individual farm or vary depending on the animal being farmed. Typical duties of all livestock farm managers are likely to include the following:
Farm managers must have industry experience working on their specific type of farm. For example, farm managers in a poultry farm will need to be knowledgeable about the hatching processes and egg production, whilst a dairy farmer must know what cows need to produce milks efficiently. It is an important job, holding a lot of responsibility. Larger farms will also employ an assistant farm manager, to help the manager when they are away from the farm or so that they can take on more administrative tasks. However, it is difficult to define the exact roles and responsibilities between a farm manager and an assistant farm manager as depends on the size of the farm and number of employees.
Farm managers should be good with numbers and have high levels of literacy as well as the practical knowledge and skills gained through experience. Essentially, regardless of their daily duties, farm managers have responsibility for all aspects of the farm and its success.
