A career as a planning officer covers a wide range of different fields including design, environmental issues, management, regeneration and development.

Any structure that is either going to be built or expanded upon, from garages and garden sheds to housing estates, must be granted permission before construction work can begin. The main aim of a planning officer is to ensure that any development has permission to go forward and all planning requirements are followed. If planning permission is not followed they must negotiate a solution to the problem and organise any action to be taken over those responsible.

A planning officer will have a huge level of knowledge on legislation and environmental and social issues on both a local and regional scale. This knowledge will then be used to provide clear guidance to homeowners and builders.

All those working in planning need to apply and adhere to national and local laws, regulations, policies, procedures and standards.
