Urban planners are the ultimate architectural large-scale thinkers. They must think of towns and cities as a whole entity and work out how buildings and new constructions will affect them. The layout of a town and particularly the placement of new structures will have great implications going forward.

They must be experts at landscape planning and all associated links that are involved with a city and its structure. These include transportation, people flow, accessibility and provision of all services.

Ultimately an urban planner is responsible for improving the economic and social environments of a place through construction and design.

In all cases urban planners must be aware of sustainability, aesthetics, safety, potential decay and light and sound issues, amongst many other key aspects.
