Product design involves the designing and planning of innovative new products; these can range from domestic goods to larger more industrial products such as cars. Designers and manufacturers will come together in this job path, often specialising in a particular industry or type of product.

People working in product design aim to ensure that a new product is aesthetically pleasing, easy to use, fits in with the client and consumer wishes and is cost effective to produce.

Types of products are vast, but the main areas of product design are:

  • Electronics and new technology
  • Home-wares and domestic appliances
  • Machinery and industrial appliances
  • Packaging

Prototypes will be discussed including the materials best suited for the product, the technology required for productions and whether the product will meet the needs of the consumer. The sample will be tested, often on members of public, so that feedback can be collected and acted upon. Once this has been addressed the product must be appropriately manufactured and marketed.
