Electro mechanical engineers oversee and are responsible for the design, building, installation and servicing machinery, tools and component section of product design.

There are three principle types of mechanical engineer, each one responsible for a different element of the process.

  • 1) Research – engineers’ research new products staying close to current and future trends in the manufacturing world. They must convince others of these new innovations and take the idea to prototype stage.
  • 2) Design – engineers take the concept from the researchers and turn this into workable plans using CAD (see CAD specialist tag). These engineers must work out how the machine, tool or component will actually work and for what cost.
  • 3) Production - engineers put together the product and look to see how it can be improved or upgraded. They will oversee the installation and maintenance.

Mechanical engineers can work not only in many fields but on any number of mechanical product from the very largest (wind turbines) to the smallest (smoke alarms).

The industry is regulated by the Engineering Council.
