Packaging technologists design, produce and supply packaging for all products created that must be stored or sent. Depending on the product, packaging technologists will protect the package for distribution, storage, sale or immediate use.

Packaging has many functions and the engineer must take charge and decide exactly what packaging is required for the product they oversee to ensure it reaches the customer undamaged and is aesthetically pleasing. Packaging can be used for; physical protection, containment of goods, information for the consumer (instructions), marketing, security and convenience. Think of all of the packages you have ever opened. Each one has been carefully designed to get all these points across to you.

There are four different specialisms in packaging technology and an engineer will usually focus on one or two. These are:

  • Product sampling (design and conception)
  • Trials (testing the product to see it meets criteria set out)
  • Best methods (improvements to packaging and testing on public)
  • Artwork (final design)

Packaging of products is now big business and will only continue to grow. It is a booming industry with many opportunities.
