A product designer will work on a variety of products from everyday domestic appliances to industrial equipment; however they will often specialise in one particular area or industry.

Their role will involve designing and planning innovative new products, or improving current ones already on the market. Through modelling, testing and producing prototypes they will be able to create a product that is aesthetically pleasing, easy to use and cost effective.

The responsibility of the designer will vary depending on the company, however most roles will involve meeting clients to establish a design brief or concept before using computer aided design (CAD) to create an initial plan. Prototypes will then be created so that the product can be tested to ensure all requirements are fulfilled. Once any problems have been sorted out the product will be appropriately manufactured and marketed.
