PLUMBER

Being a plumber is a lot more than just fixing leaky pipes. It is a profession that requires a range of skills and can include a number of daily activities. Plumbing work involves anything related to water systems in a building. This can be water supplies, pipes, domestic appliances or amenities using water in any way. As such, the plumbing profession is in some way recession-proof, as their services will always be in demand.

Plumbers work namely in sanitation systems such as sinks, showers and toilets, but this is by no means a limitation. Household appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, boilers and radiators all need a plumber to install them and repair when necessary. It is not just domestic calls that plumbers work on, their skills are also required by commercial properties and contractors when constructing new buildings.

There are a variety of tasks that a plumber is required to do, including some of the following:

  • Installing water supplies, appliances, heating systems and drainage
  • Servicing appliances such as boilers, radiators and washing machines
  • Repairing broken pipes, leaks and faulty appliances, sometimes in an emergency
  • Servicing air conditioning systems and central heating
  • Following and reading technical drawings and plans
  • Fitting waterproof materials on houses and other buildings
  • Visiting a number of different properties, and answering emergency call-outs

This profession offers a lot of variety and is highly skilled. Plumbers will often find themselves working with different clients every day, and travelling around to different places. Most plumbers will work freelance after they are fully trained and have a decent client base. However, big water companies and household stores may employ plumbers to fit appliances and service their products.

Being a plumber is suited to someone who has good communication skills, enjoys variety in their working day and prefers practical work. There is constant demand for plumbers, so with the right qualifications and skills, there could be plenty of employment prospects available.
