Technical authors play an important part of the evolution of the internet. Whilst some people are extremely knowledgeable of the World Wide Web and its functions, most are not beyond using it for day to day simple functions such as emailing or research. Technical authors form documents, programmes and tutorials that guide users through all aspects of the internet, either for personal use or business.

Technical authors must understand and then interpret technology in the most user friendly manner. There are various outlets in which they can assist:

  • User guides
  • Manuals
  • Training
  • Demonstrations
  • Tutorials

Technical authors, by the very nature of their work and the importance of helping people to understand computers and IT, can work within most industries. Initially it is important for them to asses their audience, plan meetings with them, give presentations or explain guides and then receive feedback.

Above all technical authors must produce work that is simple, clear and concise, so communications skills are highly valued in this area.
