Fitness centres and gyms are big businesses. People can now shop around for their ideal gym memberships, with many competitors in every city and town. Because of their competition, gyms must fight to sign up new members, offering various deals and the best facilities. Managers will oversee all three of these aspects and can be the deciding factor on whether a gym is successful or not.

Gym managers must start at the very beginning with marketing. They are in charge of how the club is portrayed and particularly focusing on the local area that surrounds the fitness centre. They must manage the staff and generally oversee the entire operation. Equipment must be safe, clean and plentiful for members.

Ultimately the most important aspects are profitability and membership numbers. Managers must make sure the club makes money whilst retaining current members and attracting new ones. If they do this on time and on budget they will be subsequently rewarded.

Managers will also have a list of day to day work activities, including coordinating ‘in club’ activities for members such as BBQ’s, socials and gym classes, organising and implementing staff rotas and overseeing maintenance, cleaning and repairs. They need to remain up-to-date with all regulations. Health and Safety with insurance are common areas of great time consumption for managers.
