The deputy head teacher holds the second most senior position in a primary or secondary school’s management system after the head teacher and is the only member of staff who is qualified to run the school in the absence of the head teacher.

They will assist the head teacher in leading the school and managing all day-to-day and long-term operations. They support the head in imposing the institution’s codes of ethics, conduct and behaviour and must ensure that all health and safety standards are met. Although maintaining discipline is the responsibility of all members of staff, the deputy head teacher or head teacher will typically oversee more serious cases of misconduct, whether relating to a pupil or a member of staff.

The deputy is likely to divide their time between teaching administration and teaching pupils in a classroom.
