CIRCUS PERFORMER

The circus is a theatrical show that travels around involving all types of unique performing artists. Circus performers are entertainers that amuse live audiences with displays of unique and unusual acrobatics and skills in a theatrical style. Travelling circuses employ performers to go on tour with their company, using their unique talents and putting on exciting shows all around the country, or further afield.

Circus performers will usually have their own specific act or talent. Their skills can include anything from juggling and tight-rope walking to clowning or working with circus animals. Circus performers need to have good physical fitness and lots of confidence, as many acts can potentially include gravity-defying acrobatics and dangerous stunts. Types of acts might include:

  • Aerial performers on trapezes and high wires
  • Acrobats including balance acts and contortionists
  • Break dancing, free running, skateboarding and BMX
  • Exotic dancers and actors
  • Magicians
  • Jugglers and object manipulation
  • Stilt walkers
  • Clowns and mime artists
  • Animal trainers

Increasingly, circus performers are being involved in musical theatre and stage productions so they are not always confined to travelling circus companies. Their talent may also be required on cruise ships, festivals or big events.

Depending on the talent, circus performers may perform solo or as a group. Performing to the live audience is the final stage of the work. The rest of the time, circus performers will have to do the following tasks:

  • Keeping high levels of physical fitness
  • Rehearsing the skills and choreographing the performance
  • Researching and developing new acts to stay unique
  • Maintaining the equipment used in the act
  • Marketing the event through press conferences, interviews or photoshoots

This job role is quite unique and involves a great deal of variety in locations, colleagues, routines and audiences. It comes with a lifestyle that is constantly on the move and with the right talent, circus performers can become famous for their act and travel around the world.
