PSYCHIATRIST

A psychiatrist diagnoses, treats and helps prevent disorders of the mind. Not to be confused with psychologists, who do not need any formal medical training, psychiatrists are able to prescribe medication to help in the treatment of patients. Psychiatrists help patients resolve or reverse their mental health problems through exploration of the mind, psychoanalysing past experiences to help change behavioural patterns.

Many who work in the industry choose to specialise in a particular field such as child or adult psychiatry. They can also choose to specialise in forensic psychiatry where they apply their expertise to civil and criminal cases to analyse whether or not the accused is mentally fit to stand trial.

Psychiatrists can work within the NHS or private practice, however, it may take some time to build a reputation to run a succesful private surgery.
