Required Qualifications

The vast majority of graphic designers will have completed an Art or Design foundation course, followed by a degree or diploma in a related discipline, such as Graphic or 3D Design, Illustration, Art, Photography or Visual Communications.

A high level of proficiency using computers and a wide range of multimedia design software is absolutely essential.

Those wishing to enter the profession should aim to put together a portfolio of work as early on as possible. Building a website to promote work is also a good way to increase exposure and employment prospects.

Entry into this profession will normally begin with a design assistant position.
