'Legendary athlete Daley Thompson has launched a lightshow on the London Eye which will be driven by Twitter users’ enthusiasm for the Olympics’.
Each night of the Games at 9pm, the landmark will light up in relation to positive or negative comments on the social networking site. EDF Energy, who sponsors the wheel, says it is the world's first social media-driven lightshow.
People are being encouraged to tweet their thoughts on London 2012 for that day using #Energy2012. Real-time "social sentiment tracking" will then split the tweets into positive and negative conversations. These will then be filtered through a programme which will convert them into a lightshow. For example, if the nation’s tweets are 75% positive, three quarters of the wheel will light up.
Thompson, who won gold in the decathlon in 1980 and 1984, has said: "We want to make the EDF Energy London Eye a spectacular showcase of national support for the athletes - and one that will inspire them every night of the Games."
